If your porch is held up with columns with no other framing, Craft-Bilt can build a 4 track wall system complete with 4 track windows like this: How do I measure for 4 track windows? What we are doing differently is that our wall studs are spaced at 24" on center, and as we build each successive layer of the house going up, we make sure the framing is lined up with the framing below; we carefully align all the studs so that they are effectively stacked on top of each other going up through the building.
The illustration above shows how the studs, the floor joists, and the roof rafters are all lined up in a vertical stack. There are a number of benefits to doing this.
The first is the reduction in lumber. Have framing members every 24" simply reduces the total quantity of lumber to build the house, saving some money. In addition to cost savings, this allows more room for insulation. It also lessens the number of thermal bridges from the outside to the inside of the wall envelope, i. Think of this: -In a 28' wall with studs every 16" on center, you'd have 22 studs.
By spacing our framing this way, we eliminate about a foot of lumber in our 28' wall that would otherwise be taking up valuable insulation space. These quantities really begin to add up when you think of all the walls and roof framing throughout the house. As I mentioned before, stack framing also allows us to eliminate a second top plate, again allowing for less lumber and more insulation.
Related to all this is modular layout. Modular layout means you design your building in dimensions that conform to standard building material sizes. Take the jamb size and sill height into consideration when planning the placement. We use a 30 inch sill here, but you may want to measure the height of the other windows in your house and set the new one the same. It may be necessary to remove the apron trim to accurately measure the existing sill height. With exterior walls it's best to leave as much of the existing framing in place as possible to preserve the exterior siding.
To accomplish this, choose the studs you will use for the king studs and then cut any others that fall in the center to form the top and bottom cripples.
Mark this point on the studs. For the bottom, measure up 27 inches 30 inches for the new window height - 3 inches for the rough sill and mark the studs there. Use a square to draw a straight line on both faces and the exposed edge of the studs. Prop 2x4's under the top plate to support the wall load and use a handsaw to cut as straight as possible, all the way to the exterior siding.
Remove the center portion of the old studs and discard them. Most old wood lap siding and sheathing boards will be attached to the studs at each board with one or two nails. This can make it difficult to remove the cutout stud portions.
