Model a ford brake centering tool

This is important! An easy method of keeping the cross shaft in the center of the bracket, while the adjustment is being made, is to insert a wooden wedge between the bracket and each side of the shaft. Now with the brake equalizers against their stops; the brake cross shafts in the center of their brackets as previously described, pull forward on the rear brake rod just sufficiently to take up the free travel in the rear brake lever the brakes are designed and machined to allow a small amount of free travel in each.

Next pull backward on front brake lever to take up free travel and adjust clevis until holes line up with hole in brake lever and clevis pin can be inserted. Search Site Search for:. The roller pin surfaces must be in a straight line. If not, the shoes will move off center as they expand. Before I spend an hour or more typing up stuff that may not be relevant, what have you done? Did you replace the roller tracks? If not, what did you do with them? What drums and size are you using? Have you had the shoes arced to matched the size of the drums? What other parts have been replaced with new?

I have a very good one I use when doing body work and painting. You guys are great Frank, those grinding machines were made illegal in my state at least twenty years ago, bags on them or no. Are you saying some shops still have them?? I don't know if any will admit to having them; but what post cars need to have the linings arced to match the drums? My suggestion was more for the hobbyists that might be inclined to attack their brake shoes with belt sanders, disc grinders, or other aggressive methods that generate quantities of dust quickly I'm sure there are still some old-time garages out there that have brake-shoe grinders, and use them when the need arises I still see some of these for sale on the internet.

In my early days I was trained on a Ammco bench grinder in high school and in college. They taught us how to bond lining and rivet lining to shoes, a procedure which is almost never done by mechanics today or even then for that matter.

Then sometime in the late 70's or 80's my company got word from OSHA that we had to get rid of the machines because they were now illegal. I have talked to other guys in the industry from other states with the same stories so it must be federal law.

Gee, I guess the gummint ran out of stills to bust-up, so they started cracking down on brake-shoe grinders? Frank, when you consider the amount of brake and clutch dust that was around in shops you just have to marvel at how much the human body can endure and that dosen't even take in consideration the percentage of people who smoked in those days. Well some people can take it and some people can't. So far so good for me, I sure wouldn't want to be one of the unfortunate, it's a terrible way to go.

I 've had several relatives who were steamfitters die from asbestosis before they called it "mesothelioma" ; and have lived in Anthracite Coal country for the last 25 years, so Black Lung was a common ailment here You need to be a member in order to leave a comment. The handle with the 5th bearing has a preload and acts like a spring. Therefore all 5 bearings are in contact with the axle. This is a side view without all the components.
